Very quick tutorial on how to create easy GIFs from videos for sharing on Social Media using Final Cut Pro X and an awesome app called Drop to GIF.
First things first, download Drop to GIF, it’s essential (hence the name of the title of the tutorial) for this all to work.
Then download this Share Preset for Final Cut Pro X, I’ve done most of the hard work for you by doing this 🙂
Drag the Export Preset from the Finder into the Share Destinations window in Preferences.
Now export your video using the new destination. Drop to GIF will open and begin turning your video into a GIF
* I did all of the GIFs in this tutorial using Quicktime Xs screen recorder, FCPX to edit and then using this method to make the GIFs.
Now go GIF crazy! 😀
UPDATE: If you’re experiencing crashes by dragging the preset in, double click it to install instead.
UPDATE #2: The share destination has been updated to 10.3. Make sure you’re on the latest version of Drop To GIF too

wow that will save some time. I usually record the screen, upload it to youtube and then use gifyoutube.com to convert it and then finally use that.

As soon as I export FCPX crashes and creates a normal mov file. Please help.
Remove the share destination. Make sure Drop to GIF is in the applications folder and then try and double click the share preset so it loads into FCPX.

I would not think so since the file exported is H264 from FCPX.
Sam, This works great! Thanks so much. I was trying to use a German YouTube video to figure this out.
Looks like the FCP preset may need an update with the newest version of FCP. Now the “open with” setting does not get populated and for some reason my Mac would not even let me select Drop-to-Gif as an option for that. So if I use the Drop-to-Gif export option in FCP, it just exports a regular mp4 file (which I can then manually drag into the Drop-to-Gif app to convert it to a gif).
